Cryptocurrency has made billionaires and and broken the backs of some of the biggest and baddest investors. But that has not stopped some of the more renowned prominent personalities to invest in cryptocurrency. Here are five celebrity investors who have backed crypto:
Mark Cuban has made it very clear that he is very scared of investing in crypto, calling it a “very risky” investment and to be “prepared to lose all your money” if you invest in it. Yet, it has not stopped him and his invested companies to foray into the world of blockchain and crypto, with a chat app Dust announcing that they will be developing a blockchain based messaging technology platform called Mercury Protocol. Cuban has confirmed his involvement with the project and actively backed the messaging technology.
Apart from this, Cuban has also participated in the ICO of Unikrn, a blockchain based startup which has developed the UnikrnGold token which can be used on its platform to bet on eSports matches. The startup has already raised $25M, thanks in part to Cubans association with the company.
Hip-Hop rapper Nas, short for Nasir Jones, is known to be a heavyweight investor, with money in Lyft, Washio and Fancy, among other companies. But his recent forays have attracted a lot more attentions, with his new relationship with Andreessen Horowitz, Ben Horowitz and Chris Dixon has seen him invest in Coinbase, a crypto based financial service provider.
Nas has also been talking up Bitcoin and said this in an interview with CoinDesk:
“Bitcoin will evolve into an industry as big, if not bigger, than the Internet. My man Ben Horowitz really opened my eyes to that point. This isn't of the Internet age, bitcoin is its own age.”
He has also shown confidence in the developers working in the crypto space, allaying the uncertainty perceived by skeptics, saying:
“Obviously challenges will arise from a security and privacy perspective, but the Internet was the same way 20 years ago”
Boxer, actor and cartoon character Mike Tyson was so pumped by Bitcoin that he started a company named “The Mike Tyson Bitcoin ATM”.
Yes, that is the name of his company, not his product. Its USP is to convert your cash into bitcoin in just 20 seconds. Speaking about the product, Mike Tyson said:
“I’m honoured to join the bitcoin revolution with my very first bitcoin ATM. In a few years from now Bitcoin and other digital currency are going to be a normal part of our monetary systems”
With controversies marring the company, the future was not as good as the glitter that Las Vegas, Nevada promises. But one thing is true, Mike Tyson does know how to stay in the limelight.
Sir Richard Branson
Sir Richard Branson, the mind, body and face of Virgin, an English conglomerate, was a big supporter of crypto. This was backed up by his investment in Blockchain, a bitcoin wallet business. The business had raised $40M in their initial investment rounds and Sir Richard was so impressed by the growth of the company, that he went on to invest once again into the company, increasing his equity stake in the company.
Branson described his investment as a necessity to ensure Virgin does not become irrelevant and wiped away by fast moving times. He also stressed on the importance of being an early investor, which was the prime reason for him making a second investment. Since then, Sir Richard has done his fair share of work to promote the crypto ecosystem by holding private and public events and speaking actively about the pros of a decentralized ecosystem.
It would come as a shock, but Mel B, the Spice Girl, was one of the trendsetters when it comes to the early adoption of bitcoin. She was a strong believer of the cryptocurrency and became the first musician to accept Bitcoin as payment to buy her music from her website. The former Spice Girl said:
“I love how new technology makes our lives easier, and to me that's exciting. Bitcoin unites my fans around the world using one currency. They can just pay using bitcoins!”
Mel B collaborated with Cloud hashing to make this happen. The historic headline by Coindesk, “Mel B Spices up Record Sales with bitcoin” will remain in our memories for long.
